Construction industry readies itself for BIM

2016-03-23

Partitioning expert, Style, recently announced that it was the first moveable partitioning wall company to make BIM objects for their folding wall systems available on the award winning RIBA NBS National BIM Library.

With Building Information Modelling (BIM) the biggest priority on the construction sector agenda, announcements are gathering pace. Balfour Beatty, Bechtel and VolkerFitzpatrick have joined the handful of contractors to be BIM2 verified ahead of the Government’s 4 April public sector project compliance deadline.

Business standards company BSI accredited the firms using its recently launched BIM scheme for PAS 1192-2 information management on construction projects. They join BAM and Skanska, which were approved four months ago by BSI, with Interserve, Shepherd Engineering Services and Howard Russell among the other big names to announce they have been BIM 2 certificated.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) describes the collaborative approach to construction projects via the use of a digital model, ensuring all team members can work to the same standards, providing easily accessible data on every component to integrate design and lifecycle management.

It makes recommendations for the adoption of industry conventions, challenges project complacency and promotes consistency and transparency of work processes between parties.

“This is the most significant change we have seen in our sector for years,” said Julian Sargent, Style’s group managing director.

“As a result, all the major players are readying themselves for BIM, and as the UK’s leading moveable partitioning walls provider we are proud to lead our sector once again.

“It was last September when we announced that we were the first UK supplier of moveable walls to be able to offer comprehensive BIM files for key elements of our range of partitioning wall systems.

“By being first to appear on the RIBA NBS National BIM Library adds to our products featuring in the RIBA Product Selector and our RIBA CPD programme, which means we continue to offer architects a full house of technical support.”
