Alyth Gardens has been at the heart of its community since 1936 on land carved out from the West London Synagogue’s Hoop Lane cemetery. Alyth – officially North Western Reform Synagogue – was originally born in 1933 when local families came together to ‘formally proclaim the foundation of a congregation’.

Working with two architects, dMFK and AMA, as well as Borras Construction, Style was specified to create flexible space in the ground floor hall and the first floor multi-function space.

In both rooms, Style installed a Dorma Huppe Variflex moveable wall with semi-automatic operation and an impressive 55dB acoustic rating.

By being semi-automatic means the acoustic seals are applied to the correct pressure each time the wall is closed, ensuring optimal acoustic performance. The 55dB rating means concurrent events can take place either side of the wall undisturbed.

With integrated pass doors, there is ease of access between the sub-divided rooms and each wall is finished in a Camira Lazer fabric, with a simple white melamine on the door panels.

“In this busy, vibrant synagogue, where multiple events are being hosted throughout each week, the ability to quickly create multiple rooms, or open the area into large open plan space, is essential,” said Michael Porter, Style’s group managing director.

“At Style, we have extensive experience of installing moveable walls in religious buildings, and the high acoustic specifications of our walls is a key factor as very often you can have an area where quiet prayer or discussion is taking place alongside a gathering that may involve music and singing.

“Its for this reason why the Variflex is so effective at creating that vital acoustic barrier to ensure that these events can be enjoyed concurrently and without sound interference.”
